Whistling Through Dixie.
Author: bandob

There has been a lot of discussion here on TO about sleeping car placement with regards to locomotive noise. Here's a clip I made Monday night from the middle sleeping car on #97, The Silver Meteor.  Roomette 4, with another baggage car and sleeper ahead betweem me and the locomotive.

Turn your sound up.

Make your own judgement. . Video posted primarily for the sound.

Now I'm in the first sleeper on 97, so will do another tonight for comparison.

I always take earplugs.  Makes a heckuva difference.  Try it.

I get what you are saying, but something has to be up front.

What are the name of the towns and the state train 97 went through at the time the video was taken?

Rodney,  I'm sorry I don't know the names of the towns.

By the way, this was posted as informtion, not as a complaint. I happen to like it.

OK, here's one I did just now. From Roomette 1, car 9812, the first sleeping car.

I love the sounds of trains rolling through the night.  I agree with earplugs for those who wish them.

This was made north of Charleston, SC, after reaching track speed.

B&OBill, in the top video shot, actually, train 97 went through just one town, that it. there are seven crossing gates crossings in that town.  One building in that town have seven or more garages on east side with all white garage doors.  One garage door was wide open and have about seven white trucks parked inside one of the garages. Two of the crossings are in the downtown. It's hard to see the outside store signs at night in the downtown part. Anyone recognize and remember the name of that town.

Can I guess Smithfield NC?

I love the sound of the horn as well; but it's a shame the high paying sleeping car pax have to endure it, while coach doesn't.
Also, the second video has more in-room noise.

When I rode old Budd 10/6 cars back in the 70's - upfront just like today's Meteor - the rooms were quieter except for the
occasional flat wheel.

Nope, it's incorrect.  Looking on the Google satellite map and "bingo" found that town with seven street crossings. It's Dunn, NC which is midway  between Fayetteville and Rocky Mount, NC, on the CSX A Line.  The building with six white garage doors is the Dunn Emergency Services located between E. Cumberland and E. Divine streets in Dunn. The Amtrak train you were on passed through Dunn at about 1:00am Tuesday, Spetmember 20, 2016.

do people complain about the locomotives next to the sleepers?  even as a foamer, i would NOT want the horns blasting away for 2 nights while i was attempting to sleep..........

I'd take the sound of the train horn over flat spots on the wheels anytime.

Likewise; and, the sound of the horn doesn't bother me at all.

"the second video has more in-room noise. "

I think I know why. I made the first one from the bed.  Second one, bed was not down. I suspect the bed muffled much of the noise since it was between the phone and the floor.
