SW Chiefs meet at Gise NM
Author: AndyBrown

We took a short vacation to visit Flagstaff last week and with our WB train being late, the meet was at Gise NM, a new one for me.

How long were you there?

With #3 still there as you were leaving, it looks like they were going to back out of the siding rather than running out of the other end.

Why would they do that? What's the advantage?

The switch at the other end, or a specific segment of the siding may be out of service.

I've been told that a number of sidings are out of service in the area for various reasons.  I had friends waiting to get on #4 at Trinidad recently and while tracking its progress, saw that it waited at Fox for 45 minutes for #3, even though there were other sidings in between (at least on paper).

We were only there 5-10 mins.  It was a pretty good meet.

I agree it looked like #4 was going to back out but can't say for sure.

That's right .  It was on T-O recently about the number and names of out of service sidings. Nothing said about one end of any being O-O-S.

Probably just stopping to let the conductor back on after throwing the switch back.

That would make sense too.

Do they still have that stretch of CTC on Glorieta Pass?

Interesting, but in the final shot you can see the train engineer along the ROW in the distance.  He was exiting the train in shot #2.

If that happened this past Saturday, I was on # 4 in the siding having lunch in the diner.  We went out the east end.  The delay for both trains was a supposed rock slide near Glorietta, but I didn't see anything.
