What about Claytor? Wasn't he military as well? Was there ever a  car or loco named after him?

Sleeper 32502 is named for Mr Claytor

Naming a sleeper after Boardman would have been much more appropriate. He was definitely not the power that ran Amtrak. More like asleep at the switch.

Claytor was the captain of the destroyer escort that rescued the Indianapolis survivors in the Pacific.  He was appointed Secretary of the Navy by Jimmy Carter.

Boardman does share another distinction with Claytor. He's the first Am-Pres to retire from Amtrak since Claytor, in lieu of being fired.

Yawn. More importantly, is the Toys for Tots decal still on the nose?

Much less the diesel power. Why not name the Electric 642 after him.  That seems to me where most of his attention was focused

Thanks for ruining another day before I even got dressed! That's one diesel I will never shoot again! Instead, why not put his name on one of those impotent "cabbage cars", that would be more fitting!

I'm sure that all of the Veterans who are being honoured by this unit really appreciate your sentiments!  My goodness, petty no?

Bioy! That is remarkably petty. Do you think anyone really cares which locomotives you take photos of or not, other than you anyway? ;)

Correct on the Claytor cr, we've ridden it frequently on the Auto Train.

The other "named" sleeper in the AutoTrain pool is the A. Phillip Randolph.  Mr Randolph was a long time leader of the Pullman Car Porters, and a lion among civil rights leaders.

Another photo for all the passenger railroad haters.
But I say nice tribute to a Vietnam veteran and Amtrak veteran. Happy retirement to Joe. The company will continue in good hands with Wick.

Both Graham Claytor and Philip Randolph Superliner Sleepers are not dedicated to the Auto Train pool. I have ridden both on other trains out west.

OTOH the Palm Deluxe Sleepers are dedicated to the Auto Train pool.

I'm willing to accept this as a tribute to Boardman's time in Vietnam.

As for "continue in good hands," the less said the better.
Should have written, "hapless" hands.

Not on regular assignment.  Both are all-Deluxe Bedroom on the upper level and not compatible with
standard Superliner inventory.

There are six Deluxe Bedroom Superliner II Sleepers in all. They were to all be named "Palm..."
but Claytor and Randolph were renamed before delivery. ALL are in the AutoTrain pool.

32500 Palm Bay
32501 Palm Beach
32502 W. Graham Claytor, Jr.
32503 A. Phillip Randolph
32504 Palm Harbor
32505 Palm Springs

Yes, I've seen one or both of Claytor / Randolph in the AutoTrain service on trips over the past 3-4 years.  Saw both in June on two trips, and saw the Randolph on a May trip.

(I usually like to walk through the train and note the car numbers /names for all in service.  That's why I was able to compare the square wheels on West Virginia a month ago with the bouncy and rattling ride on sleeper North Dakota last week)
