------------------------------------------------------- > With any hope, it is dead. Why-- do you live in Elkhart or Bryan, OH!? It would've been a good option to test ridership out of MI-- a solid passenger base and good revenue source. Sad to see that it's postponed... Posted from iPhone Edited 1 time(s). It is a goofy connect-the-dots Planner scheme better done with a Pontiac train diversion to Toledo for a connection.
Bad side effects were to be either missed Chicago connections or poorer times on the east cost. Posted from Android Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 09/30/16 08:13 by joemvcnj. Might make sense if you ran separate Boston and New York trains on spread out schedules so at least 1 of those each way would serve Detroit, Toledo, and Cleveland at decent hours in each direction. Schedules stops between 11pm and 7am kill ridership potential, especially with late trains. Most normal people don't work railroad hours. The best way to serve the Michigan places and then connect them with places in the East is to go through southern Ontario, but back in the 1970's or earlier when the track was still in and maintained for higher speeds and the Customs stops would not take an hour or more to enter and leave Canada. There are simply some places where the passenger train just can't make it as quickly as a bus connection. this being one of them. The Lake Shore Limited is still a viable way for many who would not ride the train at all of getting from the East Coast to Chicago and even points not too far west. Lengthen the schedules on the LSL by going through Michigan and you have a The Canadian novelty tourist train, so slow that other than to look at scenery and enjoy the inboard experience it not a usable train anymore. A train connection from Toledo would be cool but the logistics of making that happen would be difficult but possible. But, as noted by many others, a good idea might be to extend the Pennsylvanian westward thru CLE, TOL and Dearborn on to Chicago as an overnight train. Throwing away the trains full of people who formerly rode the Broadway Ltd. west of PGH is very poor management. Adding two sleeping cars and a dining car to the 42/43 consist would make a real train. Date: 09/29/16 08:12 Re: Lakeshore Reroute Author: joemvcnj I suppose that is better that sitting around Pittsburgh for 4 hours into the night waiting for 29. Still requires a significant operating subsidy from some source.
Thru coaches to Chicago on the rear of the Capitol would not cost much to do and get a lot of revenue. Date: 09/29/16 17:49 Re: Lakeshore Reroute Author: wabash2800 When there were three trains running btw Toledo and Chicago I though it might be interesting to take the Three Rivers and route it Butler-Fort Wayne-Chicago, Chicago-Fort Wayne-Butler utitlizing the (old Wabash) btw Butler and Fort Wayne and the old NKP btw Fort Wayne and Chicago. The track is good on that segment, though single track CTC all the way. That way, the second largest city in Indiana would have passenger service. The old PRR main is in too bad of shape. It's been worked on but not good enough for 79 mph passenger trains.
