I know you had a great trip, I did too a couple of years ago.
I highly recommend this to others if the opportunity arises in the future.
This is a great way to connect to the history of the original transcontinetal railroad and to the huge Harriman era and later improvements made across Wyoming.
Thanks for sharing.

Great account.  Thanks.

How did the train leave Salt Lake City?  Normally, it faces compass south in the station.

What GPS log software were you using to produce the map and graphs?

(Heading east on the Empire Builder from Portland tomorrow.)

I must ride a future detour. My previous trip on that route was early day Amtrak when the Zephyr stopped in Cheyenne.

Great pictures.

Does anyone know the mileage Denver to Salt Lake City via Wyoming?

Amtrak crews (at least the engineers) as they can do 79mph.

Amtrak and UP change crews at SLC, Green River, Speer (Cheyenne) and Denver.

Denver to Salt Lake via Wyoming is about 620 miles.

Some pretty decent shots for shooting within the confines!
Appreciate the lineside stuff.  Makes you feel like you are along for the ride.

Love the gps info, surprised that Greeley is lower elevation than Denver. And while they are going around the Rockies, that's still quite a climb in either direction.

South Platte River flows downhill.

Pic 16 must be approaching Hermosa?

I loved your Wyoming photos! So jealous! To me they represented a very beautiful state. I especially like picture 12 with the old 2 story school in the background. Nice grab!

Add in Wind River Canyon and the Wind River Mountains, the Big Horn Range, the Absaroka Range, Jackson Hole, the Medicine Bow Mountains, specifically the Snowy Range, the Gros Ventre Winderness, Devil's Tower, etc., etc. There are vast swaths of grassland that are dramatic and beautiful in a very different way. What you see from I-80 is not the best of Wyoming. You need to get off the beaten track. I've lived here almost 30 years and there are still so many hikes to take and rivers to raft.

Guess you never heard of Yellowstone or the Grand Tetons?
