Surfer Falls As Amtrak Arrives
Author: walstib

Moments before Amtrak 14 pulled into the frame for this shot with the coast oil cans at Seacliff today, the guy in the water was standing on his surfboard, riding a wave. He fell just as Amtrak got there.

A daylight run of the oil train is always a treat. The last two times it ran in daylight, it ran north with the empties. Today's daylight run was southbound with a load of Monterey County crude headed for a Los Angeles-area refinery.

Unit oil trains typically have a buffer car between the power and train . . .  this one apparently does not, or is the first tank car a buffer? It looks a little different than the rest of the cars.

No.

It's at Seacliff, Ventura County.

No buffer car.

Thick crude, supposedly no buffer car needed.

This has to be about the 4000th time somebody has asked this question.
This particular grade of crude is rated as combustible not flammable and does not require a buffer car.
And this question has been answered many, many times before here on Trainorders..

Haha, yeah, I though the same exact thing.

The surfer must have been a railfan, and was distracted by the traffic.

Or the surfer was shocked that the oil train had no buffer car...   ;-)

Thanks for the explanation, PHall.

I thought I was on TO often enough to stay up with current events, but I'll try to be more thorough in my reading. Like CPR_4000, I, too, was curious about the lack of a buffer car.

Thanks for answering the question so kindly and graciously. We both appreciate it.

You guys are assuming:

1)-that everyone reads everything;

2)-that the old guys on here remember what they read two hours ago!

:=)

The first tank car is the buffer as it is a different style from the rest of the consist.

Same style of car, it is a Tank-Train consist. But it looks like it's been painted recently.

To paraphrase a line from a Beach Boys song - "Wish they all could be California trains..."

I look forward to a photo of the Surfliner along the coast with a surfer in the foreground.
