Late Churchill Trains
Author: The_Chief_Way

In checking ASM transitdocs Monday about 2200 CST ( the site doesn't give the actual time )
VIA 693 to Churchill is showing 24 hours late at Spiwesk (?) AB, while VIA 692 inbound to
Winnipeg is only 7 hours late at Portage laPrairie.

Check out what the Google Car caught in The Pas. The train should arrive there at 1:45 am and leave at 2:30 pm.

I happened to see a while back that when I was looking at hotels in The Pas. With two locomotives it has to be the in service train and not just set off cars.

I believe 693 is actually more on time than board is showing.  Clicked on Hudson Bay left column on track a train and it gives arrival time at Churchill mostly on time even though black 693 shows train still at Thompson or  just out of Thompson heading for  the junction 24 hours late.  Therefore, I believe black dot to be an error.

Regarding southbound 692:  Monday can be a bad day at t he Pas as southbound 692 picks up engineers from northbound 363 at the Pas in order to head south.  If northbound 693 is late as it was yesterday account cold weather slow orders, southbound 692 has to wait until the 693 gets there.  If northbound 693 is on time, no problem.  However, I was on a southbound 692 when 693 did not get to The Pas until after 7 AM.  Engine crew would, therefore, not be back to their start place at Canora before Hours of Service would expire causing the crew to go dead with no other crews available for rescue.  So while we waited, crew had to go to hotel for rest.  Our 692 finally left The Pas at 3:00 PM, almost 12 hours late and arriving WPG 5:00 AM Tuesday.  More time on the train and third night in a sleeper instead of hotel in WPG for same dollars!!  All part of the adventure on Churchill line of which I have experienced many in my twenty trips to Churchill.

On Wednesday and Friday, 692 - 693 meet in Thompson and are not dependent on the connecting trains providing engineers for the return trip.  The problem is on Mondays when the two trains more or less meet at The Pas and northbound engineers have to take southbound 692 back to their start base of Canora within their 12 hours.
