Passenger Trains > NYC: Commuter beaten for failing to give space to break dancers

One feature of NYC subways in recent years is the arrival of in-car dancers and acrobats. There are many variations, but they usually breakdance, somersault, walk on their hands, shimmy up the poles, etc. Most passengers ignore them. The peformers complete their act ask for money, sometimes demand money, and move on to the next car.  Recently, a group beat a standee when he failed to mov so they could do their spiel.  They need the space to perform, he declined to give them his space.

In his first and second tours of duty, police commissioner Bill Bratton made a priority of having dancers, beggars, man-spreaders, urinators, turnstile evaders, etc arrested.  Few of the break dancers had a record or warrants.  But other folks were occasionally found to be packing heat, transporting drugs, evading warrants or parole, etc.

The side bar mentions a recent incident when a would be thief  decided to stab a subway passenger for failing to give up his wallet. I guess this victim was lucky that people who do somersaults for a living don't carry knives or guns in their waist bands.  A slip could be ugly, and bloody.
