I'm no expert here as my memories of 19th century RR scene are vague but stepping into the Wayback machine via Wikipedia, it looks like the geneology of Walpole diamond is as follows (it's complicated!):
- MBTA Franklin line lineage: Norfolk County RR built a line from Dedham to Walpole and Blackstone in 1849. Became part of the Boston, Hartford, and Erie RR in 1863 which became New York and New England RR in 1873 and then the NYNH&H in 1893. Today the line is owned by the Commonwealth of MA.
- MBTA Framingham Secondary: Mansfield and Framingham RR opened in 1870 between namesake towns crossing BC&E at Walpole. Merged into the Boston, Clinton, and Fitchburg RR in 1875. Became part of the Old Colony RR in 1879 and then NYNH&H in 1893. Today the line is owned by the Commonwealth of MA (but is dispatched by the Mass Coastal shortline RR ). In the future, MBTA wishes to initiate commuter rail service from Foxborough (Gillette Stadium) to Boston via Walpole using the southeast quadrant connection between the Framingham Secondary and Franklin Line.

So indeed it was NH crossing NH but is now effectively MBTA crossing MBTA with CSX as a tenant hauling freight on both lines. I think that about sums it up!

Grteat pictures. I live about 10 miles from there.  1707 is a 1990 vintage cab car that was
rebuilt in the last few years.  It has new air intakes, gates, raised headlights and number
board (they would have been blocked by the new folding gates if they remained in their
previous position.)  They got a new paint job, destination signs on the sides as well as on
the interior ceiling, and on and on.  They look great.
