Amtrak routes with tunnels?
Author: P

I rode the Cardinal from Cincinnati to Charlottesville, VA last week and counted FIFTEEN tunnels that we passed through. This has got to be the record for current Amtrak routes.

What route has the second most tunnels?

Probably the California Zephyr through Colorado.

The Coast Starlight (#11 & #14) go through 19 tunnels in 35 miles in the Cascades of Oregon.

As soon as I posted this, I realized that those two routes would be the most likely to eclipse the Cardinal's number. The Zephyr passes through two major mountain ranges ( do snowsheds count?) and the Starlight runs through very mountainous territory. I guess the Empire Builder may have a lot as well. I have'nt ridden any of these routes.
All of the Cardinal's tunnels are concentrated in a relatively short section from near Hinton, WV to near Staunton, VA.

A little more research:

#7(27) & #8(28), The Empire Builder, go through 16 between Shelby, MT and Sandpoint, ID. 340 miles. The Flathead Tunnel is 7 miles long.

#5 & #6, The California Zephyr, go through 21 between Roseville and Truckee, CA. 102 miles. The summit tunnel is tiny, only 10,325'.

#5 & #6, The California Zephyr, go through 43 between Denver and Grand Junction, CO. 450 miles. The Moffat Tunnel is over 32,700' long.

would likely be Capitol and San Joaquin where there is only one along Carquinez Straight, or San Diegan(oops, Surfliner) where there is none.

Northeast Corridor has 3-5 depending on how you count.

1. Baltimore
2. Under Hudson River
3. Under East River
4. East of New Haven
5. Back Bay station

Also, if you define the NEC as extending to Newport News, there is a tunnel under Capitol Hill in Washington. This is the last tunnel on Amtrak between New York and Florida.

The Texas Eagle (nos. 21 & 22)doesn't pass through any tunnels (that I can remember) from Chicago to San Antonio.

Hi jb-

Thought I might just add that on the Moffat Tunnel Subdivision, the California Zephyr passes through 26 of those 43 tunnels in just 11 miles in the "Tunnel District". Tunnels 2 through 29 are between milepost 25.4 and milepost 36.4 on the Moffat Tunnel Sub. That seems like it should be 28 tunnels, but tunnel 9 and tunnel 28 have both been daylighted, so there are only 26.

Take care...from (cold) Colorado! :-)

11 & 14 traverse some 39 tunnels between LA and PDX. Don't have any info north of PDX.

5 & 6 go through about 10 or 11 tunnels between Oak and Spx, dependng upon which track you take over the mountain.
