SEPTA Trolley Day PCC-IIs
Author: PennEngineer

Today from 10am to 6pm SEPTA is running three of its PCC-II rebuilds (carrying passengers for the first time, albeit non-paying ones) on a loop route through West Philadelphia for "Trolley Day." More info here:

I rode from 40th & Walnut all the way out to 61st and back via 49th and Chester, and alighted at 42nd Street. There were railfans out in force, with numerous groupings noted on most corners, many with tripods and all. I joined up with two railfans from New York and a student from Cheney University to do some photographing. There were lots of riders enjoying the "new-old" cars. Lots of railfans, local residents, and students. Most of the students I saw appeared to be from Drexel, but I saw a few Penn sweatshirts scattered in there too, as well as a photographer from the Daily Pennsylvanian preparing a story on the event for Monday's front page. In all, lots of fun.

Shown here are PCC-IIs 2324 and 2328 passing each other on 42nd St. around noon today. We had blue skies until about 2:00pm, when the clouds rolled in and it started raining a bit.

Nice photos on a beautiful day in Philly. What is the unit atop the roof; air conditioning?

You're right, the operator's controls don't look anything like the PCCs here in SF.

Yes, air conditioning indeed.

Great shots, James!

I had a prior committment and wasn't able to get to University City until 5:15, when it was overcast and starting to get dark. I was able to get a few photos, though, beginning with #2328 on 40th Street at Walnut.

Then I walked down to Spruce Street and photographed #2324 heading east around 5:40

and #2320 coming down 40th Street

and turning onto Spruce Street westbound.

Come back in the year 2324. They will be running on Route 15-Girard Ave. by then.
