South Africa orders 1064 new locos
Author: jmt

As posted by Peter Bagshawe on the Yahoo Group sar-L

Transnet have released details of the successful tenderers for their new locos.

465 Diesel Locos

233 to be supplied by General Electric SA Technologies

232 to be supplied by CNR Rolling Stock SA (Pty) Ltd

599 Electric Locos

359 to be supplied by CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive

240 to be supplied by Bombardier Transportation SA

All except 70 to be assembled in SA over the next 5 years

This raises the interesting question of what diesel engine will the Chinamen use? CNR assemble the HXN3 in China using EMD kits including the 16V265H, so are a Cat/PR partner. CNR also have a license from MAN for the Ruston/English Electric RK215/RK270 family, which has a long and successful history of use in Africa

Still no announcement on what prime mover they intend to use, or the model designation. However power stated to be 3300kW (4400HP)
