International Railroad Discussion >Date: 03/26/14 19:32 Author: AltiplanoRailtours This January I took took a group of rail fans on a tour of Brazil and Argentina. Highlight of the trip was the VALE train along this route. We were lucky enough to ride it a few weeks before they re-equipped it with more modern coaches, as lovely as they are, that don't feature open vestibules. Lovely train. Where else can you ride a 19 car passenger train pulled by an 8 axle Dash-9 (BB40-9W). The answer? nowhere...
All pictures from the train. Adam Date: 03/26/14 20:18 Author: tomstp And, 40 ft box cars
Date: 03/26/14 21:41 Author: octrax Really weird to see BB + BB trucks on that Dash 9. Is this a narrow gauge line?
Date: 03/27/14 04:36 Author: contactpatch The 8 axles are needed because the meter gauge track puts the wheels closer together than standard gauge track. The shorter space between the wheels means a shorter traction motor armature (and motor frame), which means less power can be absorbed by those meter gauge motors. Hence eight motors to soak up the power which six could absorb on standard gauge.

Uncle Joe Date: 03/27/14 10:29 Author: AltiplanoRailtours We are passing one of the large open pit mines along the line. Our train will turn left and cross the bridge ahead. The second photo is the view down into the pit.

Had you really been lucky you could have ridden behind one of the ex-BNSF SD45-2's retrucked to BB+BB. Initially purchased for regular use, they proved too tall for the unloading facilities and are, for the most part assigned to the BH/Vitoria passenger trains.
Attached is a shot of one the EMD's taken at Itauna, MG Brasil this past May. It has just been shopped and an air conditioner added. It's not all crap down there.. Yukon Yeti Date: 03/27/14 13:23 Author: AltiplanoRailtours There was a SD45-2 (BB45-2) on the train a few days after we went. I was hoping to see one :(
