Just heard a story on npr that China is pushing railways into the interior and western regions.

Apparently, China recognizes that heavy freight rail is indespensible for growth.

Yep. Glitzy high-speed rail aside, few people know that the only country in the world that tops the USA in freight tonnage is China.

Tonnage? What about ton-miles?

The plan involves an enormous amount of investment in infrastructure. Much of it in northwestern and western China.

China has about 1000 years of infrastructure to catch up on. In the long run it is cheaper to put the rails in first instead of building highways.

Railroads pollute less than highways which is something China is slowly realizing they have serious problems with.

The Chinese have also proposed rail lines radiating out of China to resource rich countries in the far east.

Is there much trade between India and China?

Any pictures of the CHINESE SD90MAC's or their AC6000'S?

Of course they don't need hundreds of environmental studies to make sure some fly doesn't die in the process. And the workers will move dirt for...well...dirt. Two big reasons we can't do the same.

That same lack of thoughtful review has led them to build some spectacularly ill-advised projects. Just watch what happens to the 3 Gorges reservoir over the next 10-20 years or so.
