International Railroad Discussion > Temporary Sri Lankan rail workers protest conditionsDate: 04/24/14 11:36 Temporary Sri Lankan rail workers protest conditions Author: inCHI About 3,000 Sri Lankan Railway workers, responsible for a number of trades and operations, have been employed as non-permanent employees for years with low wages and no offer for stable employment. They held a protest Tuesday that brought an attack by the police which affected both the rail workers and commuters. Service on the "coastal line" was temporarily delayed.
International reporting on this is thin - The Daily Mirror has photos of the protest at Colombo station showing some awful stuff (and with an awful watermark.) http://www.dailymirror.lk/news/46164-trains-on-coastal-line-back-on-track.html The World Socialist Website has more context and comments from the rail workers: http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2014/04/24/sril-a24-1.html Edited 1 time(s).
