China is considering a massive project to connect Bejing to Washington D.C. high speed rail line. The route would head North east from Bejing, cross Russia through Siberia, into a 125 mile tunnel beneath the Bering Straight and into Alaska, through Canada going north of the Great Lakes then down to DC through Pennsylvania to DC.

This is one of four epic rail lines China is considering. The others would go to London via Moscow, another to Indonesia and Vietnam, and one to The Middle east via Iran. Reportedly, China has the means financially and technologically to do this. Russia has already given it's approval to the lines.

Why skip Chicago? That is a hub point. DC isnt close to a hub. Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Baltimore are better hubs than DC.

What, no line from San Diego / LA to the SF Bay Area via a tunnel under the Grape Vine????

My opinion is that this is just a BS project idea, but you have to hand it to the Chinese - by choosing Washington DC as the destination, they've set their sights firmly on the world's mother lode of BS.
