ALCo bliss on the 11Up Yangon to Thazi, Myanmar
Author: GettingShort

Sure it's a 251 engine built in India but it its a 251 and not that old. The way a diesel engine should sound and open windows to take it all in. Go there soon, this is going to change fast

I took this with an Olympus OMD EM5 and the image stabilization was working over time, these trains really bounce around. Sometimes you almost bounce from your seat the the ceiling, but it's all good. The heat, the sound, the other passengers, and a few good Myanmar beers and maybe a little Burmese whisky for the rough spots and it's all good. Sorry about the quality, the encode lost a lot along the way.

Yes but a lot warmer and you don't see sights like this here in the US.

Oh and the first pic is the engine making the great sounds.

There seemed to a lot of tie replacement going on everywhere in Myanmar, but in general the track was rough. Several times on the ride from Thazi to the Inle Lake area it felt like we were bouncing on the ties.
I think the Burmese do the best they can with the resources they have. The British left them with an extensive rail infrastructure and the government has and is building new lines. Myanmar is on the cusp of great changes. Myanmar is rapidly opening to the world while trying to retain traditional Burmese influences and not forsaking old friends like the DPRK (North Korea) who continue to assist Myanmar's low level nuclear weapon program. The people are probably the kindest, most open, and simply friendliest people I've ever met.

Here's hoping that the nuke weapons-tenders remain in the kind, open and friendly camp.

Note that the locomotive is equipped with knuckle couplers.....without a coupler pin lift bar! Does a brakeman have to dangerously slither in between the locomotive and car to lift the pin with his fingers to open the coupler knuckle? Also note the the "extra height" if the knuckle itself, apparently to prevent unplanned uncouplings while the train is in motion on the minimally maintained track. (U.S. logging lines used to use "extra height" knuckles just for that reason.)

Standing between the unit and a car to uncouple is not dangerous as the train is not moving at the time. One does not have to have one foot inside the rail either.
