Last one.

After having a recent wash, 701 at Keith on 9/23/14. This unit had an overhaul late last year and was named Tailem Bend a couple of months ago. Not bad for a 43 year old Alco.

Enjoy.

Incredible stuff...makes me want to visit Oz.

What is the heritage of EL53, possibly the ugliest locomotive I've seen from down under?

Excellent photography and captions. Appreciate the rural, urban, commercial, and industrial locations. Great weather! The more I see the closer I get to my trip downunder. Thanks again.

Thanks everyone.

Regarding EL53, it is a Goninan/GE CM30-8 powered by a 3000hp 7FDL12. It was built for Australian National in 1990 and came under CFCLA ownership after AN was split up in 1997.

Cheers,
Justin

Good stuuf! You know, that SCT livery is my least favorite of of the current Australian Schemes. It took a while, but the SSR scheme finally won me over. Maybe in time, SCT livery will do the same.

Great pictures, have always enjoyed them as they are posted. My question is the pedigree of the locomotives. I am assuming that the F-style units are GM/EMD built under license? There are also pictures of F-like units but with completely different roof lines? Many of the others are a mystery to me?

Thanks again everyone.

In this lot of pictures there is mainly EMD and GE locomotives built under license in Australia.

The SCT and LDP class are an EMD/EDI Rail GT46C-ACe - An Aussie SD70ACe.

The NR class are a Goninan/GE Cv40-9i - Preety much a C40-9.

The 6020, 6000, 93 and GWU class locomotives are all UGL/GE C44ACi - C44AC.

The AN class are a Clyde/EMD JT46C - An Aussie SD60.

The G and 81 class are Clyde/EMD JT26C-2SS - An Aussie SD40-2 but with SD50 Super Series wheel slip control.

The CLP class were the last units built with the F style but with an F45 style roof line. These were built in 1970-1972 by Clyde/EMD as the CL class with the model AT26C - An SD40. They were rebuilt by Morrison Knudsen in 1992/93 to the CLF (Freight) and CLP (Passenger) classes. The CLP's were fitted with HEP and have the model AT26HC-2M. They have since lost the MK-LOC control system for the ZTR-Nexsys Microprocessor controls.

The ALF class were built as the double ended AL class in 1976-77 by Clyde/EMD as the model JT26C - an SD40. They were rebuilt by MK in 1993/94 as the ALF class model JT26C-2M and lost one cab in the process.

The GM and S class which have the F style nose are Clyde/EMD model A16C. They are powered by 16-567C and are pretty much SD9 running gear in an E unit body but with six traction motors. The last of these were built in 1967.

The 700 class are a Goodwin/Alco DL500G built in 1971/72. They are powered by a 2000hp 12-251C.

The DL class are a Clyde/EMD AT42C built for Australian National in 1988/89. Pretty much an Aussie SD59.

The loco 53 seen shunting Islington Workshops was one of 34 500 Class locomotives built by the South Australian Railways. The are powered by a 500hp English Electric 4SRKT engine.

The other locomotive seen behind it, 44s1 was one of 37 Goodwin/Alco DL500B 'World Series' locomotives built for the South Australian Railways as their 930 class. They are powered by a 1600hp 12-251B. New South Wales Government Railways had 100 of these.

The EL class are a Goninan/GE CM30-8. They would be a C30-8 in the US.

Last locomotive class seen is the 22. They were built as the 422 class for the NSWGR in 1969/70 as a Clyde/EMD model J26C. Pretty much an SD38.

Cheers,
Justin
