More Uruguay
Author: PERichardson

I don't want to intrude on Jack's beautiful post from yesterday, but thought I'd add a few photos from Penarol, all on May 3, 2012. The first three are the roundhouse area. I had remembered the 2-10-0 was in good shape cosmetically, obviously a faulty memory. Note the armstrong turntable.

Would love to chase a photo charter with that 2-6-0. Does anyone know if this ever happens and who might organize it?

An old Brill railcar at Penarol station. 5/3/12. The following week AFE cancelled all passenger service but it has since been reinstated on some lines, using the new railcars.

Allan, thanks for you supplementary post. I was hoping to score one of the shovel nosed GE's in service, but it was not to be. Sure wish I had had the time to explore the shops and roundhouse. Google Maps satellite view shows a lot of equipment stored there.

Cheers,
Jack

Jack, when we were there in 2012 there were no operable shovel noses and they told us they were all permanently retired. The last to run was wrapped in silver/blue for a TV commercial and that was in 2010 or thereabouts. The only power we saw running were a few of the big GEs and some Alstom hood units, which were on short freights and a couple of the soon to end passenger schedules. On another note I flew over and back on Pluna Airlines new CRJ900. A month later, pilots went on strike so the government shut down the airline for good. They just auctioned the seven CRJs to a leasing outfit in the USA. No plans to start a new airline from what the article said.
