Bob Thayne, WY Date: 02/14/15 11:14 Re: South Aussie Grain Trains Author: hwb36604 They sound like EMD's ????

Mike Date: 02/14/15 14:15 Re: South Aussie Grain Trains Author: coach Are we hearing all 3 of EMD's major engine designs here: 567, 645 and the 710 engines? If so, I can't think of another video I've ever seen that one can watch and hear all 3 at work! Fabulous!

You have a good ear to note that. As usual, great photography work Justin. Rick Date: 02/14/15 16:39 Re: South Aussie Grain Trains Author: TomPlatten The trains seem to maintain a "leisurely" pace. Is that as fast as they are allowed to go?
Date: 02/14/15 17:35 Re: South Aussie Grain Trains Author: MitchGDRMCo When the heaviest loco in that collection weighs 132t and the rest are below that (the bulldog nose GMs are ~112t irc) then you're not going to fly up hills like a US standard loco would....

Date: 02/14/15 21:07 Re: South Aussie Grain Trains Author: spken Great shots, Justin.
Never realised before how similar the extreme rear hood on the FQ's look to SP tunnel motors. spken in sunny Queensland. Date: 02/15/15 02:04 Re: South Aussie Grain Trains Author: AussieGWAdriver Thanks for all the comments everyone. The slow pace of these trains is they were either climbing or descending 2.2% grades with their loaded trains.
All the engines featured are EMD products. The FQ's are basically an upgraded SD60 with an EFI 16-710G3B-ES producing 3830hp for traction, AR11 alternator and the later EM2000 control system with ICE screens. They are heavily muffled hence why the exhaust stack is next to the radiator fans. The CLF. CLP, ALF's are powered by 16-645E3C's, AR10 alternator with a ZTR-Nexsys II control system. You could say they are SD40-3's. The GM's of course are powered by 16-567C's fitted with 645 power assemblies and the old D32 generator. Cheers, Justin |
