Newfie with a muffler
Author: PERichardson

Ferrocarril Antofagasta & Bolivia EMD NF210 1422 with a noise suppression device being tested. March 5, 2015 at Cumbre, Chile.

FCAB has 18 of the former Newfoundland Ry. (Canada) units, built 1956-60. All were rebuilt prior to entering service in the 1990s. They were fitted with Q-Tron microcontrol systems, cab air conditioning,
etc. Dynamic brakes were added to all except for No. 1425.

What is that where the cab window is supposed to be?

Window shades to keep the blazing sun out. Many desert railroads around the world have them.

On NF210 size obviously does not matter

Just a quick note. NFLD railways were merged into the CNR in 1949 when NFLD joined the Canadian Confederation.

Cheers.

While I knew that Newfoundland joined Confederation in 1949, it was interesting to realise that they hold their own place on War Memorials commemorating WW1 and WW2 as they were their own country/colony of the British Empire. People may forget that; I sure did.

Back to trains, I see one of the West Australian locos are coupled up to it. This Railroad is so interesting for its' collection of locos from these two countries. Plus the altitude it goes through; amazing. This is clearly a railfan location I would like to visit.

Another Australia-Newfoundland connection. The Royal Newfoundland Regiment was at Gallipoli along with the Australians and New Zealanders in WW1. There was only a small Newfoundland contingent, but there was a very high casualty rate.

The RNR also did a cavalry charge during the trench warfare of WW1 in France.

In WW2, a German U-Boat sank the Newfoundland Railway steamer "Caribou" with a huge loss of life while it was crossing from mainland Canada to Newfoundland.

From time to time, the ANZAC's and Newfoundlanders have joint memorials to Gallipoli.

There are actually 21 NF210 operating in Chile. The 3 x 3'6" gauge units operating on SQM's nitrate pampa north of Antofagasta tend to be ignored, as they operate in a restricted zone not open to the public, and rarely venture outside of the wire, Occasionally photographed on the trip to the wheel lathe at Maria Elena

901 NF210 ex CN 922, ex FCP Nicaragua 901, A910/1956
914 NF210 ex CN 914 A902/1956
937 NF210 ex CN 933 A921/1956

All 3 NF210 rebuilt Casagrande, Chena. 937 Q4 2007, 914 Q1 2008, 901 Q2 2008

On entering Chile all 3 were initially rebuilt in the FCAB Antofagasta shop (c.1995), so have FCAB modified cabs and dynamic brakes, Q-tron control

SQM initially purchased CN 937 but swapped this (not rebuilt) unit with FCAB for rebuilt CN 933, but retained the 937 number

The Pedro de Valdivia nitrate pampa is a harsh environment, locos work between the extraction face and the rotary dumpers at the officina. All track is unballested. Dumper to loading loop and return can involve a 40km trip

Some NF-210's (or 900's as we newfies know em'.) Actually had mufflers on them for use in passenger service. Over the years I've been told they either blew off, or rusted off once too often. With the end of passenger service in 1969, they left them off altogether.
