To the anti-smoke folks on a recent post, note the smoke produced. And it's not a charter. Its "real" steam!

That appears to be mostly condensed steam in the cold with some smoke, like the other china photo that was posted. Also, most engines in China are coal burning, correct? If it's producing a lot of smoke due to dirty coal, that's perfectly normal.

The QJs that are in these pictures are coal burners and contained an auto stoker. Even with the auto stocker they had 2 fireman. One whose job was to shovel coal while climbing Jeng Pang because the auto stocker wasn't fast enough. I was there in Nov 2014 and got a cab ride over Jeng Pang. The second fireman communicated to me if I give him some money he would let me shovel the coal into the fire box. I declined to pay him to do his job. It was neat seeing the Jitong at the end of steam.

It must have been a similar experience rail fans had when steam ended in the US. It was funny seeing steam running on modern infrastructure. I was there during the 3-4 month period that a few of the trains were pulled by both a steam locomotive and a diesel. When these trains came through people were upset that the train has a diesel on it. In reality, that was the rare shot. There are tens of thousands of pictures of double headed steam on the Jitong. There are only a few steam/diesel combinations. Yes, I have a steam/diesel combination on video. When I have time, I try and get that section of video in a format that I can post here.

To be able to get back into a time machine to see QJs running on the Jitong again.

Thanks for the story, very cool. I missed out on the whole China scene. Much like India in the 70s and 80s. Late users of steam.
