Ore Cars

Hi, I´d like to see the type of ore cars around the world. Here in Brazil we have basically three classes: 

a) GDT and GDU on broad gauge (1,600 mm);
b) GDE on meter gauge (1,000 mm).

Here are three types of GDU used by MRS:
 1) GDU made by Maxion has a beautiful body with the steel sheet joined by bolts and nuts.

  •      Weight: 23,100 kg.
  •      Maximum load: 120,900 kg.
  •      Gross weight: 144,000 kg;

2) GDU made by Randon:
  •      Weight: 20,600 kg.
  •      Maximum load: 129,400 kg.
  •      Gross weight: 150,000 kg;
 
3) GDU made by Usiminas

  •      Weight: 22,000 kg.
  •      Maximum load: 122,000 kg.
  •      Gross weight: 144,000 kg;

Nice photos Pedro.I think a lot of the newest ones operating down here in Australia were built in China.Just returning our iron ore in steel form I guess.Some of the earliest ones came from the Oroville Dam project in California back in the 60's,along with some ex Western Pacific F units.

1)  An empty ore train with GDT class gondolas at Carandai, MG on July 22, 2014. MRS uses to run 144 cars in bolth directions, but it is testing the 288 empties to save time in the returning to the mines;

2)  An empty ore train of GDU class gondolas at Campestre, in Carandai on July 24, 2014;

3)  The tail of an empty ore train entering the tunnel 39 in Cristiano Ottoni, on July 24, 2014

Vale and VLI uses the GDE class gondola on meter gauge (1,000mm) system.

1) GDE-215158-8 at Desembargador Drumond yard on July 15, 2012;

  •      Weight: 17,500 kg.
  •      Maximum load: 92,000 kg.
  •      Gross weight: 109,500 kg;
2) GDE-212344-4 of stainless iron at Desembargador Drumond yard on July 15, 2012;
  •      Weight: 16,000 kg.
  •      Maximum load: 94,000 kg.
  •      Gross weight: 110,000 kg;

1) Vale 1268 working as DPU in a heavy ore train at Desembargador Drumond yard. Note the different colors in the two section of the train. It means that they come from different mines;

2) Stainless GDE loaded with limestone at Vespasiano, on March 27, 2015;

3) A GDE loaded with iron ore at Vespasiano, on September 12, 2012.

Thanks for these fascinating pictures of the B-B engines and D engines, something we don't see here in the US
Are what you call narrow gauge and standard gauge in Brasil the same measurement as US Narrow (36") and Standard  (56 1/2")?
I don't see unloading doors on the bottom of the ore cars, how are they unloaded?

Brazilian narrow gauge is 39 3/8 ", it's a bit bigger the US narrow gauge.
The ore cars are unloaded at car dumpers. They work in pairs and have rotary couplers to allow to be unloaded without necessity of uncoupling from the train.

The standard gauge here is the same used in US, but just one railroad uses it. Our broad gauge is 62 63/64 ".

Here's a view of one of Ferronor Chile's new (built 2012-13) iron ore cars used on their meter gauge line between the Los Colorados mine to the port at Huasco, via the city of Vallenar.  This is about 400 miles north of Santiago.  Also a photo of the Amsted Maxion builder's plate from the same series of car.

Hi Masterphots,

Very interesting pictures. I like these small hoppers. They are different from the ones we see here in Brazil. I am curious about those green ones for fertilizers. Do you have a picture taken closer to show the inscriptions on them? I would like to know who made them here, since we have more than one freight car builder.

All three cars were built by Maxion. I intend to visit Chile in 2016 and I hope to see these cars in action. They are nice.

Photo #1 is one mean-lookin' gon. I'd like to have a display model of one. Are those side-mounted brake wheels? And what are those angled pipes coming out of the ends & bottom (See esp. photo #4)?
