International Railroad Discussion > Australian Steam - #3642 on the New Freight Underpass LineDate: 08/07/15 16:55 Australian Steam - #3642 on the New Freight Underpass Line Author: Stephenloco In celebration of the opening of Sydney's North Strathfield Rail Underpass, a number of special steam locomotive hauled services were operated on Sunday 02Aug15.
The underpass on Sydney's northern line, allows (mainly) southbound freight trains to pass under the passenger lines before heading west (& south) at Homebush. Previously all freight used the bi-directional relief line (on the fare left in the video). The new line is also of sufficent length to hold an 1800metre train clear of the passenger lines. Additional relief lines are also being built further north, which will ultimatley allow freight to operate on the suburban line In this video, Steam Loco #3642 and its train departs Concord West station & heads for the rail underpass with the final return passenger trip of the day.
