International Railroad Discussion > New Zealand - Tranz Alpine Express departs ChristchurchDate: 08/10/15 03:46 New Zealand - Tranz Alpine Express departs Christchurch Author: Stephenloco The Trans Alpine departs Christchurch station (in suburban Addington) led by GE's DXC 5287 & DXC5477.
The Tranz Alpine operates a return service daily between Christchurch on the East Coast & Greymouth on the West Coast of New Zealand, passing under the Southern Alps via the 8.5km Otira Tunnel. The train includes outdoor “viewing cars” converted from guards vans. Filmed Sunday 26 July, 0818hrs. A longer video of this train at other locations can be found via the link in my profile. The open car was real bonus in such spectacular scenery. And yet here in this country we can't even have dutch doors open.
