More Australian Steam - Loco #5917
Author: Stephenloco

Since the end of the Australian summer, we seem to have been blessed with steam hauled services in the greater Sydney region almost every weekend.

The past week has been "Rail Safety Week" in New South Wales. Starting last Sunday, there were two days on steam services in Sydney, led by steam loco #5917.
On Wednesday, loco #3642 headed west across the Blue Mountains to the Dubbo region for a number of days of excursions, aimed mainly at school groups.

In this video, filmed last Sunday, is loco #5917 passing North Strathfield on Sydney's Northern Line, on the first trip of the two days' city excursions. Ths train is heading for Rhodes, from where the train will return to Sydney Central, hauled by diesel FL220, giving the patrons a round trip excursion of about an hour.

#5917 was built in the USA by Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corporation in 1953. On the rear, diesel loco FL220 (the former 42220) is a Clyde Engineering/EMD product dating from January 1970.
