That Time Again - Recent Downunder Pictures

Hi all,

Well its that time again with another monthly update of some photos from downunder. All photos are in South Australia unless noted.

1. Our train, 5AD1 waits on the siding at Newcastle Waters in the Northern Territory behind GWU009, CLP16 on 7/18/15.

2. 7DM4 approaches Newcastle Waters hauled by GWU003, FQ01. This train was bound for Muckaty where it will be loaded with manganese for export in Darwin.

3. The two trains crossing.

Next lot.

1. Our train waiting on the main line at Katherine in the NT on 7/18/15.

2. The Ghan, 4DA8 arrives on the siding hauled by NR44 and NR64.

3. One of the loads on our train, a mobile fracturing pump.

Next lot.

1. A couple of milk tankers loaded on a 2-pack piggyback/container wagons. 53 of these 2-packs were built for the BCOL in 1995 and later exported to Australia by Freightlink in 2004. They have fold down twistlocks for container traffic although some were converted to container use only. These of course are now owned by Genesee and Wyoming.

2 & 3. 2216 and 703 wait by the grain loader at Grainflow Pinnaroo with the last train to load out of there on 7/27/15.

Next lot.

1. The sun is now up as the train continues to load.

2. Train 3152 gets ready to depart from Grainflow at Pinnaroo.

3. 3152 during a crew change at Geranium.

Next lot.

1. Pacific National owned units, G538 and DL40 stabled at Tailem Bend on 7/28/15.

2. 1283 Wolseley grain arrives at Tailem Bend hauled by GT46C-ACe's GWA001, GWA008, GWA009 on the same day.

3. 2MP5 with NR59, NR81 races through Coomandook on 7/28/15. Cab issues with NR81 saw the units reversed early on into their journey.

Next lot.

1. GWA009 stands next to the break of gauge at Wolseley for the old abandond Mt. Gambier line. On the left is broad gauge - 5ft 3 or 1600mm while on the right is standard gauge which is the same as the US.

2. The Overland, 3MA8 hauled by NR15 passes GWA009 at Wolseley on 7/28/15. This passenger service will cease to run at the end of the year.

3. GWA009, GWA008, GWA001 have just finished loading their grain train at Wolseley on 7/28/15.

1. 8229 waits outside the Mobil siding at Birkenhead in Adelaide on 8/5/15.

2 & 3. 8229 shunting the siding.

Next lot.

1. G538 on the rear of the fuel shunt.

2. One of the Sabadin Petroleum owned tank cars with diesel fuel bound for Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

3. A former Natioanl Rail now Pacific National owned tank car with diesel fuel bound for Cook. This fuel is for locomotives in the remote desert location.

1. A trailing view of shunt movement 1116 on 8/5/15.

2. 7MP5 with NR77, NR88, DL50, G538 heads down grade through the Adelaide suburb of Clapham on 8/9/15.

3. 3AD1 with GWU003, ALF18 waits on the siding at McLeay on 8/12/15.

1. Our travelling accomodation.

2. SCT service 2PM9 with SCT013, SCT011 passes 3AD1 with GWU003, ALF18 at McLeay on 8/12/15.

3. A 2014 high cube boxcar on the SCT service.

Lastly.

GWU003 at the head of 6DA2 waits on one of the two sidings at Tarcoola on 8/15/15.

Thanks DK. Those evening shots were actually taken just as the sun was rising.

It's great to be able to carry a camera at work and take photos. The company doesn't mind as long as we don't let it interfere with the job.

Justin, terrific photos as always. You are a real artist with your picture composition. I have to disagree with you on Australian broad gauge though: it's 5 ft 3 in, or 1600 mm (same as Ireland and Brazil), not 5 ft 6 in., which is 1676 mm, used in India, Pakistan, Argentina and Chile.

 In the picture were you are holding the main line at Katherine what kind of engine is that?
sorta looks like or a E or F unit.
