Alstom then acquired GE's railway signalling business with part of the proceeds from that sale. http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/business/single-view/view/alstom-entirely-refocused-on-rail-as-ge-deal-completed.html d. Given Indian Railways already has over 800 WDG-4 class (EMD GT46MAC/GT46ACe), this may be as much about capacity increase as it is to replace the thousands (2700+) of Alco powered WDM2/3s still running on Indian Railways. However, it is interesting to note that Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW http://www.dlw.indianrailways.gov.in/) has rebuilt and upgraded many original Alco powered WDM2s into WDM3s and keeping the Alco 251 prime mover. In some cases, even replacing the 12 cylinder engine with a 16 cylinder. DLI still catalogs Alco powered locomotives in their active lineup. Here is a blurb from EMDs website about the WDG-4 class. http://www.emdiesels.com/emdweb/international/indianews/autocarWDG4091009.pdf The GEs, according to the press release, will be built at a new facility currently under construction in Marhowra district of Bihar state. d. |
