Back from India
Author: 86235

Returned home yesterday from our 12 days in India. Riding the train was way more relaible than our return flights. Thanks to Delhi's first real fog of the winter all air traffic was thrown into chaos on Friday, so that our return flight from Udaipur was delayed by three hours. And yesterday Jet's flight from Delhi to London was also delayed by two hours, awaiting a connection from Bangalore, which itself had been delayed by the previous day's fog. Thank goodness for the Leelan Express and it's arrival in Bikaner 15 minutes EARLY!

So some more pictures. First taken at Jaipur Junction, with the looming bulk of the Junction Station's Metro station behind, the weekly Lucknow to Ahmedabad Express pulls in, its Alco powered WDM3A producing a fine pall of exhaust as the driver puts on power as it approaches the platform.

In the opposite direction an EMD WDP4D leaving with the daily Jaisalmer to Kathgodam train, 22 cars long today.

the interior of a Jaipur Metro train, the standards of cleanliness on the Metro are in marked contrast to elsewhere in Jaipur. Indeed we were reprimanded (in a nice way) for eating peanuts. There's no eating or drinking allowed!

Our train is the 16:15 Jaipur to Bikaner Intercity Express (arr 22:50) - also called the Leelan Express

Jaipur is also home to one of the remaining metre gauge lines, this is an Alco powered YDM4. Similar narrow gauge Alcos can be found in Chile.

The train stretched out beyond the end of the high level section of platform 2A

Whilst on our way into Bikaner to pick up the Ranakpur Express to Jodhpur we were held up at the grade crossing at Nal for a lengthy frieght train, headed by yet another Alco powered WDM heading towards Jaisalmer.

Indian Railway's increasingly use DEMUs bult by ICF on local services, this one is pulling into Jodhpur

Final picture taken at Udaipur on January 7th, train 59836, the local passenger to Nimach leaving Udaipur City behind WDM3A 14071. This too was omce metre gauge territory, today a solitary metre gauge line to Ahmedabad (186 miles) clings on.
