South African industrial steam -- REGM part two
Author: PERichardson

1.  These are all taken May 1984.  GMAM R-12 "Barbara"  brewing up in the morning.

2.  Same loco heads to Cooke Plant with the first loads of the day. That's not a volcano in the background but a pile of mine tailings.

3.  GMAM R-16 "Wendy" heads to Millsite on the old line.

Pretty amazing stuff. that's a serious tailing pile.
Any idea what is operating? Did everything simply switch to diesels?

I also remember seeing photos of the Garratts in blue. Maybe that came later.

Some of the shafts are two miles deep so a lot of dirt was removed.  btw,  the big pipes along the railway near the shafts are for air supply.  No idea what is operating there today. A lot of gold mines closed down at the turn of the century due to lower prices in the gold markets, higher labor costs and the like.  If they do operate a railway today,  the diesels would be from a contract operator,  rather than Transnet (former SAR).  I'd like to go over there and chase industrial diesels for a month but probably won't happen.

REGM Changed name to Randfontein Estates, Ltd. In March 2000 the company was acquired by the Harmony Gold Mining Company Limited

The current ore haulage contract is held by Sheltam Limited, who operate out of the old REGM loco facility

Sheltam use a mixture of ex Transnet locos, as well as a batch of C30-EMP purchased from GE do Brazil in 2007
