Joe Snider Archive: End of Japanese Steam
Author: NH2006

have a largish collection of images over in Nostalgia & History  http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,3939024  but not a lot of details so I wanted to advertise this here and get some of the experts over to that forum....

Is this one Korean?

I've also made a Flickr archive in case you know anyone else who might be interested but is not on Trainorders:

The location is probably closer to Korea than if it was in Tokyo, but still a Japanese train. :-)

Looks like the "Low Window" version of the153 Series EMU being used on the JNR Express Train "Kaimon" which ran between Osaka and Shimonoseki. Shimonoseki is located on the southwestern tip of Honshu, just across the Kaimon Strait from Kyushu.

After the Shinkansen started revenue service, there were major changes in train scheduling between Tokyo and Osaka. Many of the 153 Series EMUs migrated west from the Tokaido corridor in the mid-1960s and started running from Osaka and west, and this might be an example of that.

Thanks for bringing this to attention!

Hi ccha006,

Just a small correction.  Those two characters show Kanmon, after the Kanmon Strait, between Moji on the Kyushu Island and Shimonoseki at the west end of tthe Mainland of Honshu.
