South African industrial steam -- two "Presidential" gold mines
Author: PERichardson

Continuing our tour of South African industrial steam operations, we return to the Welkom area in the Orange Free State.  Thirty years ago there were a number of gold mines that used steam for their trains.  Two were named for presidents,  President Steyn Gold Mine and President Brand Gold Mine.  Both used near spotless former SAR 11 class 2-8-2s.  Here are a few images, all from early July 1984.

1-2.  President Steyn 2-8-2s 6 & 8 on shed being prepared for the day's work.

3.     President Steyn No. 8  out on the line

8.  President Brand No. 7 with loads

9.  Western Holdings 4-8-2 #8.   This operation was not good for winter light and I was able to get very few decent photos of their locos in the short time I was there.
