Part 1-- Usui Pass
Author: Railpax71

The Usui Pass is a mountain pass that lies between Nagano and Gunma Prefectures in Japan. It has served as one of the major transportation routes in central Japan since at least the eighth century. Most famous is the Megane (spectacles bridge) on the former Abt system rack rail.  We made a loop around western Gunma and Nagano today and visited a few places we had been stopped by snow previously.

Most of the route is a hiking trail, and a lot of work has been done to add interpretive signage, lighting in the tunnels, and smooth out the trail since our last visit.  My goal was explore remains of the Kusukaru railway so we will be back to this location
