Rebuilding GE´s and EMD´s to narrow gauge in Brazil
Author: pedrop

Hi, This thread was open to show the rebuilding process of old GE´s and EMD´s locomotives to narrow gauge railroads in Brazil using the BB+BB truck arrangments.

Enjoy!

Remind me again of the track gauge upon which these locomotives operate.

Some of the photographs, without people for comparison, look like model locomotives.

Interesting that there was no attempt to paint over former owner's names or road numbers.

Most of them were painted later, but there are some with CSX and NS painting scheme until nowadays.

I was thinking the same thing, picture 4 looks like a box of locomotive shells I picked up at a swap meet!

Fascinating stuff!

The group of 30 SD40´s arrived in Brazil in 2005 and were purchased by fca railroad. The conversion job was made by Progress rail at Vale shops in Tubarao.

This is a very interesting series and I appreciate all your efforts. I do have a couple of questions.

1) Are the units delivered with their "standard gauge" trucks?

2) I notice on the EMD units the radiator section has been lowered so the fans appear to be inline with the rest of the roof. I also notice horns are relocated in the rebuild process. I assume this is for very close clearances somewhere online. Are the entire bodies also lowered somehow, at least on the EMD's? It seems I read the newer EMD units had to be lowered also.

Keep up the great work!

Hi, yes all the trucks came with the units. In one f the pics you can see then been removed from the ship. They were used only by the broad gauge locomotive here. MRS, for exemple, used the same trucks, but spread out them a bit (17 cm) to fit in our 1,600mm gauge. The Sd´s were not lowered. Actually, they became higher than normal. The former BNSF SD45-2 are the tallest locomotives of Vale fleet nowadays, since they were rebuilt withou the lowering of the radiator section.

Only the EMD units suffered a relocation of the radiator fans. I will show how it was donne in the posts here in this thread

Vale ordered these locomotives in 2002 because neither the US and Brazilian Builders could supply new locomotves for Vale and other railroads  nescessity at that time. Later the Vale ones were sold to fca railroad. Progress Rail also bought many and ALL railroad a lot more. More then one thousand ex US locomotives arrived in Brazil since 2003. ALL railroad started to scrapp the old C30-7 in 2015. Progress will scrapp the SD40´s in 2016/17. FCA started to scrapp the DDM45´s and GT26 this year. The SD40´s will follow the same way this year. But the GE´s will run a lot more. They were relocated to a new corridor last year and VLI said they will do a good career there.
