Yes it is. Here's a double header from a LCGB photo charter in 2008. Location is the famous Devil's Gate. What a shame this fantatic line goes largely unused. The new management (previous manager died) apparently wants nothing to do with enthusiast charters, even though I'm pretty sure they provided good revenue for the line.

I suspect the Eritrean Government has a role in this as well. While the train ride went off smoothly other things went completely off the rails. Like viewing the National Day parade, the group had approval but by the time they cleared us to enter the parade area it was over. Then there was the Tank Graveyard. I've been to the DPRK and Cuba and neither were as confused as Eritrea. Still they couldn't hold a candle compared to what went on the week+ before in Somaliland.
