International Railroad Discussion > At the Shanghai Railway MuseumDate: 06/19/16 00:32 At the Shanghai Railway Museum Author: symph1 I’m teaching at Shanghai University for a couple weeks, and spent Saturday morning at the Shanghai Railway Museum. It’s a small but interesting collection. I’m sure I would have gotten more out of it if I read Mandarin (a few explanation signs have both Mandarin and English, but most don’t).

5. You’ll get exercise with this little scooter 6. It said this NG loco came from America Date: 06/19/16 00:41 Re: At the Shanghai Railway Museum Author: symph1 7. Inside the NG loco
8. Notice the Metro stop in the background. This is one of the few elevated lines. 9. I’m guessing the “Pioneer” was one of the first locos in China Date: 06/19/16 00:44 Re: At the Shanghai Railway Museum Author: symph1 10. The Museum is in an old station no longer used as such. This 1913 photo shows it as designed.
11. Interesting seating configuration. Maybe an old subway car? 12. Signaling display Date: 06/19/16 00:46 Re: At the Shanghai Railway Museum Author: symph1 13. The “Orient” must have been the premiere train between Shanghai and Beijing
14. These photos were right by the “Orient” logo, so I assume they are related 15. Rolling stock models Date: 06/19/16 00:49 Re: At the Shanghai Railway Museum Author: symph1 16. Photos of some beautiful stations from the new HSR network.
17. Mock-up of a HSR cab. Periodically someone would go in it, invite a crowd, and explain the workings, but in Mandarin. 18. The building up-center is the museum. This shot was taken from the Metro station. Obviously the old tracks are now used as a coach yard for the nearby Shanghai Railway Station. The HSR trains use different stations. When I was here in 2012, I rode the new HSR trains a few times. A trip report from back then is here, http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?6,2804830,2805007#msg-2805007 Thanks for looking Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/19/16 00:51 by symph1. Also interesting they had a train called the "Orient" when that word has now supposedly been banned for use here by our government even though the Chinese had no issues using it to name a train.

One of the major classical music venues here is called the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center. http://en.shoac.com.cn/ Date: 06/19/16 08:58 Re: At the Shanghai Railway Museum Author: cchan006 symph1 Wrote:

It's even better because you asked for advice few days ago, and followed it up with this report. There are some on TO who demand help, yet give back nothing. These were provided by a UN group based on the s160 but a bit heavier. There I believe were a couple of hundred of these locos from all the builders. J.
