VLI wood trains (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Hi, a new thread on VLI narrow gauge trains. The company started to carry a new cargo here: eucalipytus logs to paper mills. The trains use to have 40 PED or PEE flat cars and can be combined with other cars like, containers with limestone or grain hoppers.

All pics below:  PED cars loaded with eucalipytus in a spur at Calsete yard

Another mixed freight with limestone containers and eucalipytus running at Km 621. This one had a Vale BB40-9W and DDM45 working as DPU in the rear end

Neat shots, as always. Curious that Vale, a mining company, has engines mixed in on freights, but I know that I'm ignorant of operations there and why that might happen.

Miss Wiki and her neighbor The Yahoo say that oil from eucalypytus leaves is used in many consumer health and beauty products, although its effectiveness is not supported by scientific evidence, while the timber pulp is used in quality paper products.
Also, stands of eucalyptus trees make for spectacular forest wildfires.

Hi inCHI,

Vale divided its business into two main groups: iron ore and others cargos. The "other cargos" is managed under VLI control. Vale has 30% of VLi papers. The port in Vitora ES belongs to vale, so the train that goes direct to the port use Vale locomotives. For while, VLI has not licence to go further that Costa lacerda yard on Vale tracks. Since my area is near the connection to Vale mainline, it is common to see the Vale units leading the train that will be go further on Vale system.

Hi JimBaker,

Eucaliyptus is used is the paper industry and also to produce coal. The iron cast makers use eucalyptus coal in their industries. Most of the coal is produced near the plantation in the ovens made of bricks.
Below two pics from Google showing the classic coal ovens common found in Brazil and Africa.
