i would say it may be to protect  the air brake gear fitted on the frame but perhaps there could be another design reason?

here is another.... but grain cars  that were converted from coal cars ,,the design of the coal cars dates from around the early 1970s

a meet between loads and empties  in the evening

 ....a  fellow trainorders member taking some video near the hedgerow at the painted building...

A warning to personnel of an approaching train the downgrade trains can approach very quietly if not using dynamic braking

a view taken at Helidon railway station  of empties westbound

and another look at the eastbound  loads leaving Spring Bluff,note how the train bunches up against the locomotives when the brakes are released ... i think the grade is 2.5 per cent here

this is what the area looked like in the early 1950s when steam still  ruled the grades

sundown ..the loads descending the grade

also a view of the long since decomissioned semaphore signals at the end of the clip

that  under pass is only 6 feet of  clearance !
