I met a good number of English-speaking tourists while travelling around Japan in May. Many of those carrying heavy-duty backpacks and other hiking gear were on their way to Takayama to start their hiking trips, and they were riding the Limited Express Hida. (I didn't follow them. I had my own plans, mostly foaming)

Takayama would be on the western side of Japan's Northern Alps mountain range.

Managers doing check-rides are fairly common. I see you caught a few "finger pointing" at 0:22, 0:40, and 0:48.
