International Railroad Discussion > Smoky train (Brazil)Date: 09/27/16 14:47 Smoky train (Brazil) Author: pedrop Hi, sometimes we use to see a locomotive with a deregulated prime mover and producing a lot of smoke. That´s what I found in the yard neaby while watching some old narrow gauge GE´s U20C switching. Difficult to breathe with so many smoke in the air.

Javier Ortiz Dallas, TX Date: 10/01/16 07:56 Re: Smoky train (Brazil) Author: BAB Nothing more than one of several things one could be low compression which at idle will cause some cylinders to not fire at all causing over fueling, bad injectors or fuel rack, these are just some of the problems never have heard of over cooling being one. It so nice that they are part of the global cause of enviornment problems and do nothing to change things. But we in the US must do more becuase they do less.

In Brazil we have less than 1800 locomotives in operation nowadays. Just one of the US class one have more locomotive that the whole Latin American railroads together.
Brazil was the first country to use ethanol. In fact, most of the fleet nowadays use ethanol from sugar cane and the gasoline in Brazil have 25 percent of ethanol on it. Biodiesel is on almost every station around the country. Also, the energy matrix here is hydropower, not coal burner. So, I think one or two locomotive with a deregulated engine won´t affect the world climate.
