Introducing the EMD BB40-2 to a CSX engineer (Brazil)
Author: pedrop

Two weeks ago I received the CSX engineer and TO friend Alan Tellier here in my area and could introduce him to the VLI EMD BB40-2 among other brazilian broad and narrow gauge locomotives.  He became impressed by the size of the front porch of the BB40-2´s.
I hope he had enjoyed his time here and had a nice return to USA.
VLI 4817 is former CP SD40-2 5627, later NREX 5627.

1 and  2 - fca 4808 and VLI 4817 switching at Wilson Lobato yard (EWL);

3 - Yard man Julio tightening the hand brake of fca 4808 (former UP SD40-2 "snoot" 3290, later NREX 3290)

Sure is a big front porch.  Question about the boots I have seen several of the employees wearing. Are they a special safety boot or is there another reason for being so tall. Doug

I sort of thought that. Are snakes an "industrial workplace" hazard !!??

Yes, that is a standard protection required to all employee and visitor to enter the tracks on almost all railroads in Brazil. In tropical land like this, snakes are common found everywhere, specially near the tracks. They are cold blood animals and use to stay near the rails to get the heat of them. I have my own kit of safety devices required by the railroads, like boots, helmet, ear plugs, safety glasses and protection to legs like these seen in the pictures. Without them, you can not visit railroad yards or shops here.

Yes, that is a small world. It was a pleasure to meet Alan and guide him for a week of train watching here.

Could you explain that BB truck arrangement? Why so in Brazil?
Curious minds would like to know.
Thanks.............

The narrow gauge requires smaller traction motors, the span bolster trucks alleviate the disadvantage.

I am curious about what appears to be plexiglass(?) placed over the outside of the windows? Is that an anti-rock throwing precaution? or is that for something at the mine?
I appreciate the posting of this neat stuff!

That is a screen to prevent accident caused by throwing objects like stones and other debris. There were some serious accident with train crew caused by these objects and now VLI is adding the screen in all locomotives
