International Railroad Discussion > VLI order EMD for SD80ACe's (Brazil)Date: 03/09/17 09:51 VLI order EMD for SD80ACe's (Brazil) Author: pedrop I received a news that VLI ordered two SD80ACe's 5300HP to test at FNS railroad (broad gauge). They will be built at EMD plant at Sete Lagoas, MG Brazil like the SD70ACe/45.
The SD80ACe's were first produced to Vale mining by EMD in London, Canadá. Posted from Android Pedro Rezende Vespasiano MG, Date: 03/09/17 20:21 Re: VLI order EMD for SD80ACe's (Brazil) Author: bogieman Pedro,
Any word whether these will have a broad gauge version of the fabricated radial truck as on the new Tier 4 locomotives or the standard non-radial cast frame truck? Also, what is the total quantity of SD70ACe/BB locomotives ordered and delivered now? Date: 03/11/17 17:38 Re: VLI order EMD for SD80ACe's (Brazil) Author: pedrop Hi Dave, for while I do not have information about the model of the trucks they will use with the Sd80´s.
Today we had the first accident with SD70BB...two grains met in Aguaí, SP. Nobody injured. Pedro Rezende Vespasiano MG, https://youtube.com/c/minasgeraisrailways1 Date: 03/11/17 17:47 Re: VLI order EMD for SD80ACe's (Brazil) Author: bogieman Ouch!!
Thanks Pedro. Date: 05/14/17 15:02 Re: VLI order EMD for SD80ACe's (Brazil) Author: Margaret_SP_fan 0Pedro --
SD80ACes? 5300 HP? Wow!! I have not heard of any SD models made for the US with model numbers higher than "70", and AFAIK none of the EMDs or GEs used here have more than 4300 HP. I know EMD tested 6000 HP engines, but, IIRC, they and/or the RRs decided that the 6000 HP models were not practical and/or were not reliable enough -- and/or that pushing the HP rating of a single prime mover up to 6000 HP was pushing the envelop too hard. To knowledgeable people -- If I am wrong about any of this -- and I may well be -- please correct me. Thanks! Thank you very much for your fascinating and very useful info! You are a real treasure for the info you provide here. And, yes -- OUCH! for that collision! They had to have been going rather slowly, or the damage would have been much worse, and the crew would have been injured. Date: 05/14/17 16:46 Re: VLI order EMD for SD80ACe's (Brazil) Author: pedrop Hi, Vale mining has seven SD80ACe, 5300 HP, broad gauge, made in the former EMD plant in London, Canada. I've heard that they were one of the last units to be built there. Now Vale is planning to buy more, but to be built here in the new EMD plant at Sete Lagoas, MG, Brazil.
Vale also have seventy five broad gauge GE ES58ACi's rated to 5800HP, derated to 5300HP later. They are the power of the standard ore trains of 330 cars, and the new 440 cars in test.
