Japanese double-headed COFC train
Author: Hiroshi

Japan Rail Freight still operates double headed COFC trains on Tohoku Main line. Class ED75s is the particular type of electric locomotive used.

Here it comes!

double-headed COFC train speeds?

Very cool shots. How fast do passenger trains run on that line? Also, how fast do the COFC trains run?

Hello, pravihrvat

>Very cool shots. How fast do passenger trains run on that line?

95 km per hour will be the max. operating speed for locals whilst 130 km per hour for express passenger trains. Only a few express trains are running on this main line due to the opening of Tohoku Shinkansen. BTW, this Iwanuma station is a junction point where Joban is branching out from Tohoku Main. This double-headed COFC was Tohoku Main line North bound.

>Also, how fast do the COFC trains run?

Max. operating speed will be 95 km per hour. Since it is approaching to the station, it will be 75 km per hour max.

Hope this helps.

Hiroshi

Hiroshi-san,

I will be in Tokyo in March and was wondering where your favorite train-watching spots are. I know the Kanto area very well and even rode the Joban Line out to where it switches from AC to DC. Most of my pictures are taken from station platforms.

Also, do you know if JR has any shops with train souvenirs anywhere? They used to have a shop in Ueno Station years ago but that shop was closed a long time ago. I know about Blue Train in Ikebukuro Sunshine City but any information about shops that sell train things would be greatly appreciated (Tokyo, Kawasaki, Yokohama areas).

I know about the train hobby shop in the Ginza and I know Tokyu Hands has a small train hobby department. Where else can I find train shops that are convenient to subway or train stations? I'm looking for anything that has to do with JR, subways and any other lines (Seibu, Tokyu, Keikyu, etc.).

Thanks. Keep the nice pictures coming.

The station you have mentioned is Mito station on Joban line. It is very active place to see all the actions including Super Hitachi and Refresh Hitachi.

For rail-related items, there is one near Shimbashi staition.

The hobby shop in Genza is Tenshodo. Also in the other side of Yurakucho station, there is KTM store too.

Recent years, KTM and Endo are marketing Seibu, Tokyu and Keikyu equipment in HO scale. Also Green Max is doing in N-scale.

Hope this helps.

Thank you, Mr. Hiroshi, for sharing the excellent picture! I think most of us in the United States do not even know Japan has freight trains--we only know about Shinkansen! Very interesting. Kurt.

After the breaking-up of Japan National Rail, Japan Rail Freight(JRF) has been organized to create a freight train network covering Japan. During that peirod, a lot of talks were done to min cost of operation. Among them, elimating cabooses just like in the U.S. and elimating hump yard operations in various regions. That's sad. No more humping to be seen. Instead, formulating trains to run between freight stations. Still, in Tokyo, you can see tanker trains, COFCs, and some hopper trains. Not much boxcar operations any more. For long-distance runs, such as the train I captured in Iwanuma are still popular to haul containers in distance.

JRF is now buying new electric locomotives to replace old ones such as class EF65 and ED75.

Hope this helps.

Hiroshi-san,

Thank you for the response. Can you help me with some addresses for these shops? I really want to find the one near Shimbashi Station. Last year, I looked for it but could not find it when I was there. I have a bilingual map so I can find the shop if you can tell me the address.

What is KTM? Do you know the address for this shop?

Also, is Blue Train still in Sunshine City?

Thank you again for your help.
