Railfan Technology > Slide scanner for Win 8.1

Anyone know of a decent slide scanner that works with Windows 8.1? Epson being true to form, doesn't offer a software update for my trusty old 4990 Photo.

Of course Epson has a Windows 8.1 software upgrade for their scanners. The catch is you have to buy an upgraded scanner to get it.

Oh, Windows 9 will be out in early 2015.

So far, two good reasons to stick with Windows 7!

Alan, how about using VueScan to run your trusty Epson in the interim.

Vuescan is pretty easy to set up. Go to http://www.hamrick.com/ and look around. I'm using it with a Minolta Scan Dual III film scanner and a Canon 656U flatbed and getting better results than I did on the factory software

True now but it was 9 when I made the post. No one outside MicroSoft knew M$ was going to skip a number number in the series. No wonder there a glitches in the software when they can't even count 1-10. That never started at 1 either.

I use it with my minolta too also on windows 8

Alan, you can download and test a free version of Vuescan to see if it works with your hardware/software setup. It adds a watermark until you register. If I recall, the version I tried with my Win 7 desktop and Epson V700 did not recognize batch scanning with the Epson slide holder. But you should try it.

As a side note, I see that Vuescan is up to version 9.4.48. I last tried 9.2.05 back in April. Since I paid for the Pro license back in 2002, all updates have been free (best $49.95 I ever spent; it's now up to $79.95, which is still a bargain), so I downloaded the newest version, and (ever hopeful) tried it on the Plustek slide scanner. Comparing the colors, the Plustek OEM software, called QuickScan, *still* has the most accurate colors. I'll post the scan over on the Nostalgia board.

Windows 8 is absolute garbage.

Every time Microsoft "improves" things they make it worse! I know they "think" they are improving things, but they are in their own little world and don't know what's going on in the "real" world. They have to come up with something "new and improved" every couple of years so they can get more $$ out of everyone.
