Data Archiving Issue -- SSDs can lose data in 7 days w/o power
Author: E25

I'm not sure if this is new news to techies, but I received an "Extreme Tech" bulletin today via e-mail that warned that "SSDs can lose data in as little as 7 days without power"

http://www.extremetech.com/computing/205382-ssds-can-lose-data-in-as-little-as-7-days-without-power?mailing_id=1252005&mailing=ExtremeTech&mailingID=90CFB3505495C9C70436C55ABDF6901D

For data preservation, it sounds as if SSDs are not an appropriate tool for long term storage.

I have SSDs in all of my machines (five) and permanent
storage of essential images is kept on a WD World Book
with spinning platters.

Two of my machines with SSDs are laptops that see sporadic
use, and I also have a 'road' machine that gets occasional
use. I've never had a problem with the SSDs in these machines.
I am thinking that after four years of constant use on several
machines I need to replace the SSDs before I loose my sweet
@ss.

John.

I have a Seagate hybrid drive in my MacBook Pro which uses SSD for immediate, frequent tasks, but stores everything on a regular hard disk. Not quite as fast as a straight SSD but a good compromise and probably safer for data storage.
