New camera
Author: eagleeye

My Kodak DX 6490 (DSLR) I bought in 2004 has succumbed to old age and a few too many injuries. It took very good pictures but was difficult to down load and charge.
I am not up to date on the latest camera technology, thing are moving way too fast.
I noticed in a thread below a camera card was inserted directly into the computer or monitor to view or download, that sounds like something I could manage.
I am looking for a DSLR with interchangeable lenses that won't break the bank, max at about $500.00 for the camera,I will get lenses later.

Thanks

SD Memory cards are very common, all digital cameras that I know of have them but not all PC's have them. Certainly not all Laptops and smart-ish phones have them. Some cameras will download via Wi-Fi, but once again most PC don't have wi-fi.

There's a lot of new things going on since 2006, even since 2014.

It's a good starting point but a lot of people disagree with the recommendations. But it's a decent survey of the whole field of digital cameras. Another site:

I took a quick look at B and H (Photo equipment and other stuff) and found a Canon T3 for $499, just a buck under your $500 goal.  It has an 18-55mm lens and a telephoto, 75-300mm.

I also found an offering fro Nikon.  It's $496 with an 18-55mm lens.

Sony has an offering for $498 that also has an 18-55mm lens.  The lens offerings for Sony isn't as good as for Nikon or Canon but you should be able to get a decent telephoto or wide angle.

These are just three offerings.  Go to http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ and just search for whatever you have in mind and select a price range to see what's available.  They have just about anything you can think of, and some you wouldn't even imagine.  You can probably beat their price by a few bucks but B and H has been around forever and others on Trainorders will probably tell you that they are a reputable dealer.  On many products they have free shipping.

Buy a DSLR from Nikon or a Canon.  Don't bother with anything else.  In your price range don't buy mirrorless.

I agree that if you buy a DSLR, Canon and Nikon are your choices.  However, the mirrorless cameras by Sony and others are rapidly challenging the long held markets of Canon and Nikon and are worthy of consideration (I do not have one, using DSLRs myself)

Here in the UK, I own a Sony flat screen TV. It comes with HDMI & USB inputs. I can put the camera card into a USB card reader and watch the pics on TV. Also, my cameras will plug into the USB socket for shows. I'm not getting into camera advice, there's enough 'experts' on TO!! Chris UK.

One of the guys in our circle of fans uses a Sony mirrorless.  I've experimented wirh it and frankly it doesn't measure up.  The autofocus is poor.  The electronic viewfinder is coarse and small.

The best mirrorless is reputed to be the Fuji X-T1.  But it's a huge whack of money.

The Sony a7 line is on fire with real innovation. The a7R II's 42MP back-lite sensor has incredible color and low noise. It has 399 focus points for lighting fast focus even with non Sony lenses. The viewfinder is much bigger than the last version and is very smooth and fast. It can do 4K video.

However, it is very expenisive and way out of the OP budget. Nikon or Canon for $499 would be the way to go at the moment.

Still, Sony is shaking up CaniNikon's dominance.
