Nikon 200-500 f5.6 AF-S VR
Author: JDRumley

I am considering buying this lense and am curious if any one here has any experience with it good or bad. I already am using a Nikon 16-85 f3.5/5.6 VR and a 70-300 f4.5/5.6 VR, and am considering the 200-500 to fill cover the longer range. I do wildlife/outdoor and macro photography in addition to railroad. I am not at all keen on the "do it all" zooms as you sacrifice too much at the longer focal lengths. I am currently using a D7000, but may eventually add a full frame unit in the future. Thanks in advance for your input.

I think it is compatible w/your current camera.  WWW.lensrentals.com.  You can rent one for 60 bux for four days.  That should answer your questions.

It gets rave reviews.  But it's a big lens that might be a bit annoying to lug around.

Hello, I just purchased this lens. I have been waiting for a somewhat unbiased review by a professional photographer first. I found one by Thom Hogan ( http://www.dslrbodies.com/lenses/nikon-lens-reviews/nikkor-zoom-lens-reviews/nikon-200-500mm-f56-lens.html ) After reading it I bought one.  I think he used it on a Nikon D7200. Yes the lens is heavy but I expected something like this to be heavy. It has its purpose. I have taken about 30 pictures of a immature Red Tailed Hawk with it so far. PM me your e-mail if you like and I will send you a few pictures.
Regards, John

I am having good luck with my Sigma 150-600 Sport lens in the same focal range. Professional metal build and heavy. It will save you money and gets excellent user reviews.
