Steam & Excursion > Fireworks And Steam Revisited

UP 844 had limped to Union Station KC from Topeka, Ks due to a bad bearing while pulling the Little Rock Express back in May 2011.  I took some shots when she finally arrived.  My main goal was to photograph her that night.  I was fairly new to night photography then, so I was surely anxious to burn as many pixels as needed to hopefully get a decent exposure.  Looking back now at how many I took then, I just shake my head, but, again, I was new to night photography.  Remember, everyone starts new at one point.

When I came back that evening, there were 5 or 6 other shooters, IIRC, with tripods in a line.  I positioned my tripod with the rest and took some (understatement) shots using different exposure times.  Some looked good on the LCD screen, and I hoped they looked better after I downloaded them to my computer.  We were chatting with each other when there was a loud BOOM.  The Kansas City Symphony was playing a concert in front of Union Station as part of the Memorial Day festivities, and the big finale was a fireworks show.  We all scrambled to reposition our tripods.  Timing the fireworks was a bit of a challenge to this then night photo newbie, but I came away with some good ones.

Here is one of the better shots from that night.  It is similar to one I uploaded to TO back then.  This was during the Memorial Day holiday, but I think this will fit right in for the 4th of July as well.

On the other hand, I'm glad I took as many shots as I did that night.  I'm not so sure if this scene can be repeated again.  Photo taken 5/29/11 at Union Station KC.

Great work Russell!  You would never know that you were new at this.  All of the fireworks is back in Cheyenne these days.  Hope that this scene can be repeated at some point in time!!
