Lake Shore Limited Derailment - photos

Some of my photos from the derailment of 49(26th) outside of CUS. I arrived on location just as they split the train and a P32 shuttled the cars into the station to let the passengers out.

That sucks how things like that happens, anyone know what caused them to go on the ground?

either a sharp wheel flange or a flat switch point would be my educated guess

And seeing those private cars including the B&O "Moonlight Dome" it could have been those special cars.  I'm really glad that no one was injured too.  Thanks for the great photos.

All of the cars look to be repairable.

Having lived in the Chicago area since November 1971, this seems to happen about once a year in CUS. All those double slip switches MUST be a bitch to maintain and keep in perfect order.

The crews concern/caution is reflected in their voices when shoving a long train (like 20 plus car AAPRCO consists) thru those crossovers.

Now I know why each time I arrive on a train into Chicago, the conductor announces that all of us passengers are to remain in our seats during the arrival procedure until the train comes to a final stop and conductor says it is okay to deboard.  That is probably why no passengers were injured yesterday.

On "long distance trains" you are correct. However, on the commuter trains entering CUS, rarely do many of the people STAY IN THEIR SEATS!

It doesn't appear the train was shoving into the station at the time. The consist had the two NY sleepers and baggage on the rear. So, it was being pulled into the station. Also, pax photos from on board show the seats facing forward with the Amtrak coach yard off to the right.

None of those cars were on this train.  They are parked on a track in the yard next to the river.

Puzzling circumstances!

Interesting that the first and fourth car kept "on track" if you will, while the second and third diverged, most likely the third following the second.....

Definitely could be a wheel flange issue......or dare I say and "opps" in the tower controlling the switch with a realization by the time the fourth car approached....purely hypothetical, of course.

Switch should not have been able to be thrown from a tower or any other location with a train in the detector (OS) section.

we have those slips in BOS NYP PHL WAS and dont have nearly the incidents at the rate that Chicago has derailments ... interlocking circuitry prevents the switches to be activated while there is a positive shunt in the section block ...
