on the road again . .
Author: 3rdswitch

. . . that's right, out again. That's what retirement is all about. Spent a week on a houseboat on Lake Powell then, since I was already out west, headed for the former Santa Fe transcon. The route from Bull Frog, UT, took me through familiar territory at Black Mesa and lucked out as I ran across the eastbound Black Mesa and Lake Powell empty headed for the loader at Black Mesa first near Tsegi (top) then near the Black Mesa loadout (middle). After a short night in Flagstaff, headed out a bit late waiting at Williams Jct for quite a while as the sun got higher and higher finally catching an eastbound (bottom). . . FIFTEEN more . . .

. . . while waiting at Williams Jct heard a Phoenix bound train get a track warrant. Caught him in terrible light dropping down into Ash Fork, AZ (top). Nice old water tower in Ash Fork with a nice condition Santa Fe herald (middle). stopped at the Crookton secret spot for lunch catching this westbound (bottom) . . . TWELVE more . . .

. . . after gassing up in Seligman for a ridiculous price, said to myself, if I see an eastbound head light coming on the way to Pica, I will turn around and catch him at Audley. Rounded the curve on Hwy 66, saw a headlight, turned around, and caught this lengthy eastbound grain empty at Audley (top) before continuing on to Pica and an afternoon on Yampai Hill. On arrival there were two westbounds stopped on the hill between Pica and Yampai for maintenance which I could not catch but while waiting another westbound stopped behind at Pica catching him departing Pica starting the four mile climb (middle). The hill is pretty much a westbound in the afternoon place to visit. Next westbound was this vehicle train a little more than half way up (bottom) . . . NINE more . . .

. . . next westbound ALMOST got blocked by a smoky eastbound with a third westbound seen coming in the distance. Fortunately the westbound was slow and the eastbound fast and short.
. . . SIX more . . .

. . . nest westbound DID get blocked meeting an eastbound (top). They SEEMED to run in threes as the next made it slowly up the hill (middle) with the DPU pushing away (bottom). . . just THREE more . . .

For you in So Cal, not so ridiculous I guess but for ME from CO, $3.79 is a dollar more than our normal price and unexpected in AZ where gas prices are USUALLY a quarter to fifty cents LESS than ours in CO. Such is life on the road. Now, looking back at filling the houseboat up at $4.75 a gallon doesn't seem so bad.

Congratulations Joe on IOTD.

Gas pricing can be both name brand, and location. In the example below, Barstow is a city with a great number of gas stations. The 76 Station at 1600 East Main St is at the end of a freeway off ramp. It’s also about a dollar more per gallon than other gas stations just blocks away.

To get this slightly back on topic, across the street is a McDonald’s. It’s railroad themed, and unlike any other McDonald’s you’ve seen or been in.

Nice bunch of photo's in beautiful wide open spaces; certainly makes me miss the west!

Speaking of Lake Powell, my cousins who live in Granada Hills have done the same thing for many summers; vacation on a houseboat there.

Cheers, Jim

Great photo's...I remember when trains magazine did an article on the Black Mesa.. I believe that was way back in 1973.

Well, Larry, there are other railroad themed McDonalds out there. In Marion, the one
on the west end of town used to have a small model train in it. Ft. Madison, IA, was
railroad themed for years. Savanna, IL, is attached to a railroad themed c-store. So,
railroad themed McDonalds seem to appear in locations with a strong rail heritage.

I won't comment on the price of gas.
